MariaDB is a popular open-source relational database, widely used in Linux distributions, web hosting and enterprise applications. These MariaDB interview questions and answers cover its history, how it differs from MySQL, storage engines, replication, backup, security and tuning.

MariaDB interview questions and answers

Basics

1. What is MariaDB?

MariaDB is an open-source relational database server that began in 2009 as a fork of MySQL. Michael “Monty” Widenius, one of MySQL’s original creators, started it after Oracle acquired MySQL through Sun Microsystems.

2. How does MariaDB differ from MySQL today?

The two started out almost identical, but they have diverged. MariaDB adds features such as extra storage engines (Aria, ColumnStore, Spider), system-versioned tables, sequences and built-in Galera clustering. Meanwhile, MySQL adds its own features, such as Group Replication and InnoDB Cluster. Therefore, they are no longer drop-in replacements for every workload, so test before migrating.

3. Which clients and tools does it use?

The mariadb command-line client (older systems still have the mysql alias), mariadb-dump for logical backups, mariadb-backup for physical backups and mariadb-admin for administration.

Storage engines

4. What is a storage engine?

It is the component that stores and retrieves table data. Different engines offer different features and trade-offs.

5. Name common MariaDB storage engines.

EngineBest for
InnoDBDefault; transactions, row locking, crash recovery
AriaCrash-safe replacement for MyISAM, used for internal temporary tables
ColumnStoreAnalytics on large datasets
MyRocksWrite-heavy workloads with good compression
SpiderSharding across several servers
MEMORYFast, temporary in-memory tables

High availability

6. How does replication work?

The primary writes changes to its binary log. Replicas read the log and apply the changes. MariaDB supports global transaction IDs (GTIDs), which make failover and re-pointing replicas easier.

7. What is Galera Cluster?

Galera provides synchronous multi-primary replication. Every node can accept writes, and transactions commit on all nodes together. It suits high availability, but it needs at least three nodes and low-latency networks.

8. What is MaxScale?

MaxScale is a database proxy from MariaDB. It handles read/write splitting, automatic failover and query routing.

Backup and recovery

9. Logical vs physical backups?

  • Logical (mariadb-dump) exports SQL statements; portable, but slow for large databases.
  • Physical (mariadb-backup) copies data files while the server runs; fast to back up and restore.

Combine full backups with binary logs for point-in-time recovery, and test restores regularly.

Performance

10. How do you find slow queries?

Enable the slow query log, then analyse it, for example with pt-query-digest. Use EXPLAIN or ANALYZE to see how the server runs each query.

11. Which settings matter most for InnoDB?

innodb_buffer_pool_size (often 50 to 70% of RAM on a dedicated server), innodb_log_file_size and max_connections. Tune based on monitoring, not guesswork.

12. When can indexes hurt?

Too many indexes slow down inserts and updates and use storage. Index the columns used in WHERE clauses, joins and sorting, and remove unused indexes.

Security

13. How do you secure MariaDB?

  • Run mariadb-secure-installation on new servers.
  • Remove anonymous users and the test database.
  • Grant least privilege, with separate accounts per application.
  • Bind to private interfaces and block port 3306 from the internet.
  • Enable TLS and, where needed, data-at-rest encryption.
  • Keep the server patched.

14. What are system-versioned tables?

They keep the history of every row automatically, so you can query data “as of” a past point in time. This helps with auditing.

Keep preparing

Practise each answer out loud, and run the commands in a lab rather than memorising them. Interviewers often ask follow-up questions, so make sure you understand why each answer is true.
