Common scams in India and how to spot them

KYC and PAN update messages

“Your account will be blocked today, update PAN here.” Banks never ask you to update KYC through an SMS link. Open your bank’s own app or visit a branch.

Electricity disconnection messages

“Your power will be cut tonight at 9:30 pm, call our officer.” These come from personal mobile numbers. The “officer” asks you to install a screen-sharing app or pay a small amount, then empties your account.

“Digital arrest” calls

Callers pose as CBI, police, customs or TRAI and claim a parcel with drugs or your Aadhaar is linked to a crime. They keep you on a video call for hours and demand money to “clear your name”. There is no such thing as a digital arrest in Indian law. Hang up and call 1930.

Part-time job and task scams

You are paid small amounts for liking videos or rating hotels, then moved to a Telegram group and asked to “invest” to unlock bigger tasks. The money is never returned.

What should I do if I already lost money?

Call 1930 straight away and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. Then call your bank’s official helpline to block your card and UPI. The faster you report, the better the chance of freezing the money.
