Security policies: common questions

Which security policies does a small business need?

Start with an overall information security policy, acceptable use, access control and passwords, incident response, data protection, remote work and devices, and backup. These cover the questions most customers, auditors and insurers ask first.

Are these policies enough for ISO 27001?

They are a strong start and map to key ISO 27001:2022 clauses and Annex A controls. Certification also needs a risk assessment, a Statement of Applicability, more supporting procedures and evidence that the policies are followed. Try our ISO 27001 self-assessment to see what else you need.

Do these cover the DPDP Act and CERT-In rules?

Yes. The incident response policy includes CERT-In’s 6-hour reporting rule and 180-day log retention, and the DPDP breach notice to the Data Protection Board. The data protection policy covers notice, consent, rights requests and retention under the DPDP Rules, 2025.

Can I edit the policies?

Yes. Download the Word file, add your logo and change anything that does not match how you work. A policy only helps if it describes what your team actually does.
